"So you admit what you did was wrong?"

"Perhaps. Do you admit that what I did might not have been wrong?"

I leaned back in my chair, the harsh light of the single florescent bulb managing to wash out what little color remained in the room.

"Murder is always wrong."

"In self-defense?"

I sighed. "A. Self-defense is not murder. B. What you did was most decidedly not in self-defense."

A chuckle.

"Interesting, choosing the definition of words to suit your beliefs; an unconscious admission that there is no true morality, only perspective."

"Oh come off it, this isn't time for philosophy! Just admit it, we can get you a reduced sentence; the evidence is overwhelming."

I threw down the old manila folder, pictures and paperwork spilling out across the scratched wood table, and ran a hand through thinning brown hair.

"I did nothing *wrong*, good sir. There was something I needed, so I took it."
"A car. The owner disputed your need."

"Rather vociferously. I simply explained that I had to leave the state immediately-"
"Because you stole millions from your employer!"

A little wave of a hand.

"Details. ANYway, he felt my explanation wasn't worthy, and threatened me with physical harm."

"To which you responded by pulling a gun and shooting him!"

"How ELSE would you respond to a threat? You eliminate it. Simple logic."

I sighed, pushing away from the table where the being sat, gathering up my paperwork.
"Do come by again! I miss our little chats."

As the door closed behind me, a Lt. handed me my coat.

"Guess he's going away for a *long* time judging by the look on your face," she said.

"Yeah."

"Don't tell me you're feeling sorry for him?"

"No. More..confused. I don't get how he looks at the world. I'm not a psychologist, my knowledge is rudimentary, but it seemed like he honestly did not know why murder was wrong. Kept asking me what 'murder' was, trying to argue terms."

The Lt shrugged, sitting back down at her desk. "Some people just don't see the world right."

"Sometimes I wonder if some people are actually people at all."

Your dialogue is fantastic. I have a couple favorite parts, first--->I sighed. "A. Self-defense is not murder. B. What you did was most decidedly not in self-defense."

And this--->"I did nothing *wrong*, good sir. There was something I needed, so I took it."
"A car. The owner disputed your need."

"Rather vociferously. I simply explained that I had to leave the state immediately-"
"Because you stole millions from your employer!"
